observation of a session- 24th sep

Observation of a session

Morning assembly :
One boy was very excited in singing. He was mentioning "next what to sing". Nice warm up rhymes. Two kids were busy talking to each other. Two kids nicely hugged each other. Two were hitting each other. Then facilitator interrupted them. Two were enjoying themselves sitting away from the circle. One was observing all the others, how they sing and dance. One was rigorously doing exercises. Then they all jumped with a lot of excitement. One started crying as her father was ready to leave her. Everybody excited and danced to the tune of a song, while one was sleeping in the middle of the circle.

Activities :
Writing on slate, coloring, clay modeling, writing spellings of words while  playing Doctor game.

Children's interaction with material and activity :
Children were showing respect to the material they were using. They were collecting materials that they needed, one by one, forming a queue. They were handling the books very carefully. After free time got over, they kept the slates and stationaries back in the rack.
They were anxiously waiting for the clay while the paper was being spread out. They were all exploring the news paper (for numbers, pictures, photos, alphabets). They were very happy to create different animals with clay and very excited to use shining and chumkies to decorate their animals. They were making animal sounds. They were comparing their dress with the animal skin. They all slowly cleaned the place by rolling the newspaper, and putting it in the dustbin. The stage was so nice to look at with so many creative young minds.
They all started drawing animal pictures. They all were very much interested in taking the stencil, drawing their cages/animals and color them.
They all started listening to a story. They started recalling the story from the last session. One boy didn't want a story.  One was sleeping and comfortable.
They started playing animal doctor game. They are nicely coming up with solutions for animal problems. One was upset because he didn't have an animal with horns.

Interaction with Peers :
They were sharing the material with each other. They started sharing the pictures they have drawn. One was scared of a spider. They all sat in a circle. They observed what is in the tray (cello tape, gum, sand, color sand, paint, sticky "they finally found it is clay"). One boy's mother sent him one letter and he wanted to read it.
During snack time, they wanted to sit with one particular friend. There was no space. One boy created a space for his friend. They all liked to make animal sounds while eating. They were trying on the door how much they reach. Who reaches the high will be the engine. They were close with one another.

Interaction with Faculty :
They started sharing their feelings with Padma. They all wanted to share their snacks with Padma. They all were friendly with Padma. When they needed help, they would ask for help.

Interaction with themselves :
They took the material and started writing whatever they felt-like on the slate. One boy was walking like as-if he was a lion. The other one was dragon. One was flying like an aeroplane. One was scared of a Spider. One wrote a rectangle with 4 colors shaded in it.
They all went to bathroom to wash their hands one by one. One was sitting like an elephant. One girl was very much worried about the cleanliness and she was cleaning the other's stuff also. One was playing with his shirt tucked to the door handle. One was reading by herself.

Reaction to communication :
When asked questions, they were enthusiastic in answering. One so nicely said that he is not liking the other person's behavior. One boy was upset because he hurt his peer doing wrestling and facilitator said that was not an acceptable behavior. One was eager to share his snake story. When asked questions, they have answers ready with them and solutions for problems. They were reacting very well to both verbal and non-verbal communication.

Building rapport :
As one boy entered the room, everybody welcomed him with a shout and asked him about his birthday party, the previous night. They were sharing the chart for spelling. They were helping one another by finding the animal. One was showing her drawing to the other, and she was happy about it. They started imitating the facilitator.

Behavior exhibited, intentions visible and intentions addressed :
They observed the pictures that were put on the wall. They were recognizing the pictures. They were well organized. They were following the circle-time codes.
They suggested to see in the mirror oneself. They were excited to take library card. 2 were fighting for the sake of it. Two started fighting and playing a game. They were hugging each other. One hit the other, the other felt bad. In a moment, they smiled at each other.
So nicely they confessed their mistakes (said sorry for pushing). While running, one hit the other. Later, they made good friends. Kids enjoyed free time.

What I learnt about Children :
Surprised to see that they were able to tell that day's date. They were all very kinesthetic type. At any age kids given responsibility, they can very well handle them. Age is not at all a hindrance. They came and saw what I was writing. They were smiling to me. Kids observe a lot. Boys and girls were playing their own games, after forming 2 groups.
